franksemails.com - about

Why this site? -
The original motivation for this site was to allow people on my mailing list (80 odd people) the choice of whether they wish to download an attachment or not. Back in 2005, there were still a few people are on dial-up, so sending them 5 meg attachments wasn't fun for them. Other people have certain files blocked by their work email servers (e.g.: video files), and quite often I got "can you rename it and send again?". So, out of the goodness of my heart, I came up with franksemails.com.
These days, just about everyone has ADSL, Cable or mobile broadband, so dialup is more or less a thing of the past and franksemails.com is on corporate black-lists everywhere, which defeats the purpose of getting around the file blocking. Still, this site keeps me amused, so it's still here.

Ads -
There are a few other sites, which, like franksemails.com, post up humorous pics/videos/links etc. The problem with many of these sites is that they have bukkake shots right from the moment you open the page. While this is great, it's not really appropriate for the workplace. franksemails.com instead has a great shot of me the moment you open the page. Text ads are all that I have on this site.

It looks crap -
There's a web site that also provided some inspiration for franksemails.com, and that site is http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.com. Apart from being funny, I found the site easy to read because it's so easy on the eye. Maddox is right - "your monitor is not a piece of paper, no matter how hard you try to make it one". Check out http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=faq. I had a website back in my uni days as well, and that pretty much looked like what franksemails.com does today anyway - boring black background with plain text. My html skills haven't really progressed since then. Nah, what am I saying? I'm just lazy - seriously, it looks crap because I'm lazy.

What do you use to make your site? -
Most of the stuff done on my website was originally created with, believe it or not, Windows Notepad (check out: www.notepad.org). Years ago I wrote a custom written tool to generate the html, which I still use to this day. I don't intend on sharing that tool with anyone, if you're wondering, because it's crap. Seriously. I've been meaning to redo the site in asp.net, but it doesn't look like it's gonna happen any time soon.

What do you do for a living? -
I write business database applications in C#/.NET and SQL Server.
